Choosing a Theme
1. DIVI by Elegant Themes.
My number one pick is DIVI. I absolutely love it. It is really an easy theme to work with and it is simple to learn. They provide tons of learning material so you can get your blog up and running in no time.
I use Divi to build all my websites and blogs and 99 Everest is also a product of DIVI.
Let’s look at some key features of DIVI.

You can always start with a free theme and later upgrade to a premium one.
It is a great place to start your blog if you want to test the waters, just know, free themes sometimes lack resources like training materials or tools.
Luckily OceanWP is a great free theme with loads of resources. If you need premium extensions you can always upgrade.
Elementor is a plugin (free) you can install on your theme. It will allow you to use the page builder and build your blog in real time. No coding involved.
Really simple and easy.

Buying and Uploading of DIVI
First, you have to follow the link and buy Divi. You will then have to download the zip file and store it where you can find it easily.
If you for some kind of reason don’t have an option to download just head over to members area or login again and it will take you direclty to the members area.
Once you’ve downloaded DIVI and saved the .zip file in a save location head over to your WordPress dashboard.

Hover over APPEARANCES > CLICK ON THEMES
Then CLICK ON ADD NEW
Click ON UPLOAD THEME
Then finally, CLICK ON CHOOSE FILE – this would be the ZIP file you downloaded from DIVI and CLICK UPLOAD.
So, either one or two things are going to happen. Your theme is going to upload successfully or WordPress is going to give you an error like the one below ⇓
The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini.
This a very common error and can be a pain in the @$$ sometimes but luckily it is easy fix.

DIVI has extremely nice layouts and they release new layouts almost every week. A layout is a fully designed website and all you need to do is to import what you like and customise it to your specific needs.

I know it is a travel blog, the beauty is, you can turn it into anything you want or choose a different layout if you like.
Like I mentioned before, the best way to learn is by doing it yourself. Keep in mind you have to learn the basic design features of DIVI to fully harness the power of the page builder.
DIVI’s documentation is one of the best and helpful tutorials I have ever seen. You will without a doubt learn everything you need to know about DIVI.
Plugins are software applications users install on top of your theme to give it extra features and benefits.
The most common types of plugins used are plugins that provide –
- Social share/follow
- Web Statistics
NOTE – Do not be a plugin hoarder. It will slow your website down and it will be penalized by Google. Keep it light and free from bad plugins.
The plugins we are going to share with you will be the only ones that are necessary for your blog.
Before we start with the necessary plugins let’s look at how do you install and activate a plugin.
Hover over plugins in the left panel and click on ADD NEW.
1. Use the search bar to search for all plugins.
2. Once you found your plugin, install and activate. The activate button (option) will appear as soon as the plugin is finished installing.
3. If you want to install plugins, you can always look at the “active installs” and star rating of the plugin to give you an indication of the quality of the plugin.
Plugins are completely up to you. I can suggest plugins “we” as bloggers use and recommend. As you grow and develop your skills as a blogger you will learn what will suit your blog the best.
I am going to share the most common plugins all bloggers use regardless of their niche and blog type.
1. Yoast SEO
By far the most popular plugin for SEO is Yoast SEO.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing a website in such a manner so search engines like Google will prefer it above another website for the same or related search term.
Yoast is great for beginners starting out with their blog. As you add pages and write articles for your blog, the Yoast plugin will indicate with a smiley green face or a sad red face how correctly your post or page is optimized for SEO.
The nice thing about the Yoast plugin is when one of your posts or pages gets a red sad face, Yoast will provide a solution to improve on whatever is needed.
Every blog needs social sharing buttons and what better plugin there is than Monarch?
It is a premium theme and it works and looks great.
Best of all, if you purchased DIVI you get access to Monarch and all its premium features.
Check out this video below for all the awesome features and power of the Monarch plugin.
Another plugin that is crucial for your blog is an email opt-in plugin. These plugins allow you to collect readers email addresses.
There are various free and paid plugins you can use but being part of DIVI you get access to the very popular Bloom plugin.
The bloom plugin is just all round great with second to none features with straight forward easiness.
4. WP Smush
Adding images to your blog can, unfortunately, slow down your blog’s load speed and Google does not like slow websites at all.
Use plugins like WP Smush to help with the compression of your images.
WP Smush optimizes all your images automatically without losing a drop of quality.
In today’s world of blogging a plugin like WP Smush is vital to have in your toolbox.
Premium and free plugins will sometimes only be available from the creator’s websites. Plugins like Monarch and Bloom can only be downloaded from Elegant Themes.
Let’s quickly look at the proses of uploading a plugin directly to WordPress. I am going to assume you already downloaded Monarch and Bloom from Elegant Themes and stored in an easy access folder on your computer.
Ok, so hover over plugins and Click on ADD NEW and once the page opens, Click on UPLOAD PLUGIN.
1. In case you missed the Upload button.
2. Choose the zip file you downloaded
3. Once it is uploaded, Click Install Now.
After your plugin is successfully installed you have to activate the plugin.
That’s it. Easy as pie.
Each and every plugin will usually have supporting documentation explaining and how to use the plugin effectively. I recommend going to the creator’s website to find and learn from these documentations.
You are getting GOOD at this.
Your First Post
Alright, it is about time!
Writing your first post is kind of a special moment in your venture and I bet you feel a bit nervous?
You don’t have to be, just take your time and spend a good deal of time writing one good post than spending time writing a bunch of mediocre posts just because some blogger mentioned he is producing 5 blog post in a week and so should you!
Don’t listen to that guy. He probably has a handful of writers helping him out and forgot how long it actually takes to write, edit and make a post look good on your blog.
So, what should your first post be about?
You can always do an introduction post about who you are and why you started the blog.
Dive right in the meaty stuff if your a specialist in some area of expertise.
Whatever it is, don’t worry too much about it, you are not going to send traffic to one post only and it would be best if you can wait until you have about ten posts before starting a traffic strategy.
Your main focus right now is to learn and produce REALLY good articles for your blog.
Let’s get your first post up and running. We are going to use the DIVI builder to create all your post.
It is extremely easy, just follow the steps below.
Hover over Post and click on ADD NEW.
1. Enter your post title here.
2. Set your Featured Image. This is the image you usually see at the top of a blog post.
3. Publish your post or save to draft.
4. Click on USE DIVI BUILDER
Just select START BUILDING on the next page and it will take you through to the blog post where you can start working on it.
1. Your Blog Title
2. Your Featured Image
3. Your sidebar – I highly recommend removing “META” from your sidebar as nothing screams newbie more than a META widget in your sidebar.
When you are done with your post go to your Dashboard, hover over appearances and click on WIDGETS.
Inside your widgets area, you can add and remove widgets from and too your sidebar.
4. This little green button lets you add modules to your posts like text, images and other cool features.
If you want to learn everything about these buttons go to the DIVI Documentation area.
A Couple of Last Words
I know this is a long post and it seems like Russian backwards but YOU GOT THIS.
I usually hate when bloggers share their depressing story about how their lives sucked before they started blogging but I want to say one thing.
IF I CAN DO IT SO CAN YOU.
There is absolutely nothing special about my background or skills. I learned everything I needed from a blog like this.
Now, it is my time to pass the torch and learn someone else.
So, if you found this article in any way helpful would you please be so kind as to share and or leave a comment?
It would mean the world to me for sure.
